The plaque awarded for this distinction is displayed prominently in the “lobby” area of the establishment. Of course, I was flattered that this prestigious award carried my name. However, I must admit that I often wondered why my name should be attached to this honor.
Upon reflection, I realized that I have spent a lifetime dedicated to a mission of cleanliness, among other things. As a youngster I was an Assistant Mess Sergeant in the US Army and at age 17 I learned that kitchen cleanliness and food handlers’ attention to sanitation are important public health issues. Later after my college days at Cornell University I found myself the sole owner of a building maintenance company in Dallas, Texas, where I learned even more about the importance of cleanliness in caring for a wide variety of businesses. Later, operating a hotel and restaurant company out of Columbus, Ohio, my interest and attention to quality and cleanliness was further enhanced.
On returning to Cornell in the mid 60′s for grad school and teaching, my interest in these areas was further heightened as I did a great deal of consulting work for a wide variety of clients where I wrote the standards for their inspection programs. Skipping to more recent ventures, we helped launch the Superior Small Lodging Association which encouraged the small hotels and inns to excel in their housekeeping efforts and be rewarded by specialized advertising on their behalf. We initiated what was then the first county-wide inspection program that certified certain smaller properties as excelling in their housekeeping among other metrics.
As I recorded this information which is hardly inclusive, I began to realize the answer to the question, why me? Yes, I have indeed spent a lifetime identifying and assuring quality standards with a very particular emphasis on housekeeping. What could be more important in an industry where we house and feed our fellow human beings?
